Vazhakkai Thoran / Raw Banana Podimas / Vazhakkai Puttu


Raw banana is a common vegetable in south india.. We cook different recipes using vazhakkai Vazhakkai Puttu / Raw Banana Podimas is a very simple and healthy recipe prepared with raw bananas.. Here first i cook the raw banana and grated vazhakkai it added lot of taste to the poriyal..


Crushed garlic and cumin seeds, which gives a excellent flavour to the poriyal.. It well goes with Tradional Poondu kuzhambuAmma's puli kuzhambu, Milagu vatha kuzhambukarunai kizhangu puli kuzhambu, Vendhaya kuzhambu... Instead of always preparing vazhakkai curry or roast you can try this simple recipe for a change as it doesnot require much oil or ingredients and can be prepared quickly...



My hubby's favourite it with venthaya kuzhambu.. so I hope that you must try this recipe and let me know how it's turns out from you....

Cooking time : 10 mins

INGREDIENTS :

Raw banana - 2
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Salt - as needed

TO CRUSH :

Garlic - 3 cloves
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tspn

TO TEMPER :

Coconut oil - 1 tbspn
Mustard seeds - 1 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Shallots / Small onion - 5 (chopped)
Green chilli - 1 (chopped)
Curry leaves - few

METHOD :

  • Take raw banana and cut the top and bottom of it.. set aside..
  • Heat a pan with water and place the raw banana (noted the banana is fully immersed) and cover it with lid..
  • Now let it cook for 10 mins.. in medium flame..
  • Untill it became soft but firm enough to grate...
  • Peel the skin and Shred it with carrot grated and keep aside..
  • Now crush the cumin seeds and garlic and keep aside.
  • Now take grated raw banana in a bowl and add in enough salt and grated coconut and keep mixing..
  • All are ready.. let's we start tempering for that heat a pan with coconut oil.
  • Add in mustard and urad dal allow to splutter..
  • Then add in shallots, curry leaves and green chilli, crushed garlic and toss it for 2 mins..
  • Then add shredded raw banana along with the coconut and salt.
  • Saute well untill it starts roasted well.
  • Givwe it a quick stir well and switch it off.



PICTORIAL :


Take the raw banana 
Cut the top and botton portion
In a kadai add some water and raw banana
Cover it with lid and let it cook for 10 mins
Now it's done for grated, switch off
Take away the boiled raw banana
Peel the skin
Now it's time to grated
Now it's done
Take garlic and cumin seeds
Crushed it lightly (sorry the pic is not clearly)
Now all ingredients is ready
Now take raw banana 
Add some salt
Grated fresh coconut
Mix well and keep aside.
Heat a pan with coconut oil
Add in mustard and urad dal and allow to splutter
Now add in chopped shallots and chilli
Toss it for 2 mins
Add in crushed cumin and garlic
Toss it for 2 to 3 mins till raw smell goes.
Now add in raw banana coconut mixture and toss well
Now transfer it into a serving bowl
Now it's done
