Semiya Upma



Vermicelli upma / semiya upma is simple version of making popular south indian breakfast recipe of upma. We normally use this for payasam for a change I wish to make upma. How about a savory breakfast with a tangy twist ? Bursting with flavor and fragrant, Our morning meal was delightful. Vermicelli upma is quick and simple to prepare it within 15 mins and with very few ingredients.

Cooking Time : 20 mins

INGREDIENTS :

Onion - 1 ( chopped)
Green chilli - 4 (sliced)
Ginger - 1 small piece (mince)
Cashew - 8 
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Salt - to taste
Oil - 2 tspn

FOR BOILING :

Roasted vermicelli / semiya - 1 cup
Turmeric - 1 pinch
Salt - 1 tsp
Oil - 1 tsp
Water - to boil

METHOD :

  • Boil the water and add vermicelli along with a 1 tsp of salt and turmeric.
  • Once the vermicelli is cooked (it should be soft and mushy), turn off, pour the vermicelli into a colander to drain compleately and pour cold water over it and mix it with a spoon of oil and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add in mustard and let them to splutter.
  • Add in urad dal, chopped onion, sliced chilli, Chopped ginger, curry leaves and saute for few secs.
  • Add in cashew and saute it well, for 2 to 3 mins.
  • Now add in cooked vermicelli and add salt. (remember you have already added salt to the boiling vermicelli, so add accordingly).
  • Mix it lightly and see that no lumps form, and it is ready.
  • Serve hot with chutney or pickle of your choice.

PICTORIAL :


 Take roasted vermicelli in a bowl
 Now heat water in a pan
 Bring to boil
 Add vermicelli 
 Add in salt
 Turmeric powder
Cooked it for 10 mins 
 Drain it
 Pour the cold water over it 
 Add in a spoon of oil, mix it lightly and keep aside
 Take your ingredients
 Add in oil to your pan
 Mustard
 Urad dal 
 Add in chopped ginger
 Add in sliced chillies
 Add in chopped onion
 Add in curry leaves
 Toss well for 2 mins
 Add in cashew 
 Add in cooked vermicelli
 Add in salt
 Mix well
 Now it is ready
Serve hot .......
